Being outside is one of my favorite activities—whether it’s walking, eating, drinking tea,
or reading a book. We recently moved, and our new backyard has a lot of flowers on the edge,
but the middle didn’t have anything. I wanted more color, more interest for the bees, birds, and
butterflies.
I found a plant nursery that delivered and planted trees. Score! I got a vitex, a yellow bell,
a crept myrtle, and some blue flowers I’m not even sure the names of. It took about six weeks
before everything was set. I was so excited on planting day!
After everything was planted, I had to deep water every day for three days and then water
twice a week to get the plants established. The last few days have given perfect gentle rain to
give everything a chance to settle.
I don’t consider myself a gardener. I tend to be the “try it and see” type. Actually, I’m the
same way with my laundry. I toss everything in together, and after that, it’s survival of the fittest.
May the odds be ever in your favor.
Despite my lazy gardening, I have plants all over the house—the pothos, peace lily and
cottage cheese plant—have especially taken off. I found some watering bulbs at the library thrift
shop, and the plants are much happier in an especially bright window. The mint is taking off
again. My mother-in-law’s tongue had to be replanted because it became root bound and kept
falling over. I swear the inside plants can hear the rain and want more water when it’s raining.
